Trauma Treatment Services

New Leaf Services, LLC is proud to offer treatment for trauma and stressor related disorders. This includes, but is not limited to, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

New Leaf has providers who are trained in several forms of psychotherapy focused on trauma treatment. Deciding which therapy is best suited to address your specific symptoms, is a conversation best had between client and therapist. To aid in this discussion, a brief description of each of the therapies for trauma offered by New Leaf Services is below. This will give a general vocabulary and a basic understanding to better facilitate a conversation between client and therapist.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): CPT is a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) trauma-focused therapy protocol. In this therapy you learn skills to better understand how a trauma changed your thoughts and feelings. It will help you see how you have gotten “stuck” in your thinking about the trauma. It helps you identify trauma-related thoughts and change them so they are more accurate and less distressing. This therapy is best suited for individuals who are dealing with intrusive thoughts about the trauma and feelings of guilt and shame.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT is a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). DBT is not exclusively trauma focused, but it does address trauma symptoms, particularly if the symptoms have been present since childhood or teen years and persisted since. It emphasizes individual psychotherapy and group skills training classes to help people learn and use new skills and strategies to develop a life that they experience as worth living. DBT skills include skills for mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. It is most effective for individuals who have struggled with a pattern of perceiving and interacting with the world around them as well as difficulty regulating and managing their emotions.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): EMDR is a therapy that involves focusing on distractions like hand movements or sounds while you talk or think about the traumatic event. Over time, it can help change how you react to memories of your trauma. EMDR is best suited to address mild to moderate symptoms of PTSD.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE): PE is a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in which you talk about your trauma repeatedly until the memories are no longer upsetting. You also go into situations that are safe but which you may have been avoiding because they are related to the trauma or you perceive them to be unsafe, even if they are safe areas. This therapy is best suited for individuals who avoid places, people, and activities they once enjoyed because they feel anxious or panic in those situations.

Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT): TF-CBT is a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention designed to help children, adolescents, and their parents overcome the impact of traumatic events. For example, it is designed to help with traumas related to sexual abuse, physical abuse, domestic violence, and community violence, an unexpected death of a loved one, natural disasters and war. Though this therapy is designed and intended for children ages 3-18, it can be modified to treat adults in specific situations.

At least one therapist with New Leaf Services is trained in one of the above therapies. Some therapists are trained in several, and some treatments have more than one provider available at New Leaf. Additionally, almost all of these systems are available via distance services.
